Back Packers through Costa Rica?

Hi. I'm planning a three month "backpacking" trip to Costa Rica except I really don't want to carry a backpack. I was thinking of bringing a Duffel Bag with wheels or a standard suitcase with wheels. I will most likely be traveling across the country and taking buses. I have been told that wheeled suitcases won't work there since the roads are muddy or cobblestone. Maybe I am just not understanding, used it in Mexico and it worked fine on the cobblestones, little bumpy but no big deal. What do you suggest? When you take the bus across the country, is there a place to store your luggage? The idea of wearing my pack isn't appealing much to me. Would love to hear from you!

Well, we're all different, so I can't knock your choice of luggage, but after many, many trips through Mexico and Central America, I have found that hands free mobility is the best way to go, especially if you're on the move. Consider the added security by not having to set your gear down while shopping or sight seeing...any distraction and you could lose everything and in these difficult times, theft has substantially increased everywhere. 3 months is along time to drag your gear over rough terrain and those streets will certainly ruin the wheels of your suitcase...then what? Perhaps the answer is a back-pack with wheels, but I would get used to wearing it, especially for bus travel and crowded terminals and streets...perhaps you are worried that you will need a huge one? Not so...just note where the laundry services are and plan to have it done on a regular basis.
Oh yes, and three months is a huge amount of time to just spend in CR , unless you plan alot of lounging around. My pack is small to medium size and is always accepted as carry-on luggage.
