What kind of tack for Hunter Jumper shows?
Is it unusual or unprofessional to use black tack in a H/J show? What about a synthetic bridle, but leather saddle? Will an all purpose saddle suffice or do you need a jumping saddle? Obviously it will depend on the level of competition, but what is generally accepted?
The proper tack to use for the hunters is Brown Leather. Saddle should be close contact (also called a jumping saddle) not an A/P. That said, at smaller shows the judges are often pretty forgiving of non-traditional tack. Not everyone has the money to go buy new tack, and most judges are understanding. However, some of the more snobby judges will not pin a horse in black tack or an A/P saddle. As far as the synthetic bridle, if it's a good synthetic nobody should be able to tell the difference. However, if it's something really obvious like nylon, then I'd replace the bridle with leather. You can buy a new bridle for very little money, so it would be worth it.
I say ride in what you have for your first few shows. If you like showing, then save up money to buy more "proper" tack when you can. Start out at the smaller, more friendly schooling shows where people are more welcoming to newcomers. And remember to have fun. Winning isn't everything!
