British airways, Rick Steves and Passports Please help.?

OK first off, I'm getting a flight from Paris to Rome with British Airways. We are obviously getting a connecting flight in London. My question is, do I have to check out and back in through security and customs and re check baggage or is it all transferred. I am flying into and out of Heathrow and both flights are british airways. This may seem like a stupid question but I have never had to catch a connecting flight before. Also how long will this take?

My second question is about Rick Steves. Are his book good? I know he has good reviews but they are on his website. Has anyone used these and how useful are they?

The third question is about passports. When in France/Italy/Thailand, do I have to have the passport on me, or are photocopies enough. I am an Australian citizen.

Also last question, are there any guide books or websites that are Australian based? I keep looking for information but its all American.

As you fly with one airline, and likely booked the tickets as one whole, your luggage will be checked on to your final destination. Always ask when you check them in whether that is the case, but I am sure it is with BA.
In London you have to go through security again, and maybe have your passport checked again, but you will not be able to leave the airport unless you have many hours. On the information about your flight you will find the information about how long you have in London. One hour will be enough for a very fast connection, often they will plan is such that you have 3 or 4 hours. Only when you have more than 6 hours you can think about leaving the airport.

Rick Steves books are good, but I think the book Europe through the back door is more one to read before setting out. I have never seen one of his other books.
I always use the Lonely Planet series, from an Australian publisher. they cover the whole world, in smaller and bigger bites. Best if you travel on a low budget, with hostel information, information on where to catch a train and things like that.

When abroad you should always wear your passport on you, wherever you go. When stopped by a police officer for whatever reason he will want to see your passport, check it for being real and read the real stamps in your passport. Photocopies are not going to do, as it is very easy to change those.
