Flying to America. First time flier what do I need to know?
I am flying (from Heathrow) to Cleveland Ohio on the 2nd of November and returning on the 19th.
What advice can you give me? Can I take my Multi-tool Leather-man with me? Can I bring food with me? Do I need anything particularly? What restrictions are there on things to take over on board and in luggage? What are the weight restrictions on a AA flight?
Anything you can tell me would be great!

First, review both websites below, one from the USA and the other from the UK. They tell you basically the same thing, but there may be minor differences.

Let me begin by answering your questions.

You can check your Leatherman (but not carry-on). Once in the USA, most places that do not have a metal detector will allow you to carry on your person.

You may bring food along with you on the plane, just be aware of liquid rules, so purchase your drink once past security.

Read the websites for restrictions for whatever items you are carrying.

At the minimum have your passport, Airline Ticket, other travel documents, and carry-on entertainment with you. Check as much as possible.

Read the AA website for your baggage allowance. To summarize, you can carry-on one bag plus one personal item, and check one bag. Additional checked bag at US$50. Weight limit for checked bag is 23 kilos (50 pounds). Overweight up to 32 kilos will be charged US$50. Above 32 kilos are disallowed.

Allow me to give you some additional advice:
Allow extra time to go through security. It can be a nightmare on US-bound flights. Be courteous to the security staff. There is no reason to be nervous. With the extra time, you will not feel rushed.

At the airport, keep your travel documents handy, someplace where you can quickly present them when required and secure them once done. Try not to pack too much or too chaotic on your carry-on bag. Simpler is better.

Bring snacks for the flight, some candies or something small to tie you over. Bring some simple entertainment. I bring a book, a magazine, and my mp3 player. If you want to bring a game system, try to pack it efficiently and not bring too many games.

I always sleep on both ways across the Atlantic, however I have seen others sleep eastbound and remain awake westbound. Think on what time you arrive and how quickly you want to try to avoid jet lag. If you can go to sleep easily once Stateside, try to sleep a little on the plane to arrive rested, then go to sleep at a regular hour that night to wake the next morning on US time.

Last thing is to remember to enjoy your trip. You will be nervous, so just go with the flow and enjoy the airport, seeing the planes, the journey, and the destination. I am excited for you!
