Are all the keys/locks in the world all different from each other?Can a key of China open a lock of the USA?
Can a South African car key open a Chinese car lock? Can a door key of Canada open a door lock of Australia? Are all the billions or trillions of keys and locks in the world ALL DIFFERENT from each other? Isn't any chance different key/lock companies make the exact same key/lock, but it different parts of the globe? And what about the billions or trillions of cars in the world: do they have ALL different locks and keys? For example: there are millions of VW Golfs in the world... do they ALL have different locks and keys? If I have a VW Golf in the USA can my key open the door lock of a VW Golf in Indonesia? Thanks.
There are absolutley hundreds of thousands if not millions of identical keys in the world, simply because it is impossible to make every one unique. For example, a certain brand of door lock has 5 pins, each of which can be at one of 5 different settings. this means that for this brand there are only 3125 different keys made (5^5). if for example they made 1 million locks last year that means that if you bought one of those locks there would be 320 identical locks also sold.
obviously manufacturers make many more than a million locks in a year, so really the security provided by a lock is not provided by that lock being unique, but instead by the fact that it would be impractical to find one of the identical keys (think of a theif carrying three thousand keys to your door and trying each and every one of them to try and break in)
