I'm going to the Big Island of Hawaii this July, What should I not miss while I'm there?
There's so much to choose from it's a bit overwhelming. I don't want to leave with regrets. My family be there for a week. Thanks in advance for all your great ideas.
A short list of "must sees" on the Big Island would doubtless include, the Volcanoe's National Park regardless of your age or your interests! Beyond that, much would depend on what you're interested in experiencing.
If you enjoy seeing places the make the "MOST..." list, then a drive up the Saddle Road, then up to the visitor's center at Mauna Kea will put your near the summit of the TALLEST mountain in the world, if measured from its base at the bottom of the Pacific. Measured from sea level it still stands an impressive 13,796'.
If you turn around and look across the valley, you will be looking at the LARGEST volcano in the world, Mauna Loa. It rises 13,679' above sea level, slightly lower than Mauna Kea, but its volume is an impressive 18,000 cubic miles!
Next on the list, South Point...the SOUTHERN MOST POINT in the US! And, while you're down in that area, if you feel up to a hot, dusty hike of about 4 1/2- 5 miles rd-trip (allow about 60-75 min. each way) you can visit and/or swim at Papakolea Beach, green sand beach, better known as Mahana (Bay). Go early...tends to get crowded after lunch.
Drive another 15-20 miles along Mamalahoa Hwy (Hwy 11) towards Hilo and the Volcanoes' National Park (VNP) and you will come to Punaluu, black sand beach...95% guaranteed to see some Hawaiian green turtles sunning themselves or riding the waves.
I would not attempt to do South Point, Mahana, Punaluu, and the VNP all in One Day! You could easily spend 1/2 to a full-day at the VNP alone, especially if it happens to be erupting in an accessible area. Kilauea is THE MOST ACTIVE volcano on earth, having been continuously erupting since 1983.
Outside of that, I'm sure you can find lots to fill in the extra days you may have, lol.
