My black lab is an excellent retriever in the water - but on the land, not so much - is that typical?

My lab LOVES retrieving things in the water, but when we try to play a game of fetch on land, he could simply care less! How can I get him to enjoy retrieving things on land? (we can't get to the water everyday unfortunately)

My uncles dogs are like that, they love swimming. I'm sure you probably know that they have webbed feet. If you want to get him to fetch on land maybe you could start slow.

When near a lake or body of water, playing fetch, every once in a while throw the toy inland instead. Alternate back and forth until you eventually add more and more inland throws. Perhaps he will eventually catch on.
