I'm planning to backpack in Europe this July. What are the top places I should visit?

The first thing to know is there is more than you can possible see in a month, even if you only pick one country. Europe is so rich in history and culture, it is hard to know where to begin.

Another thing, is do not fuss with the "top places." Many are so over visited that they are swarming with tourists, even though the prices are really high - to try to keep the numbers down. However, nearby there is probably something that is 90% as good that the average tourist does not know about, so it empty, and often free. I call this the "90%" solution. It really worked in England. Examples:

St. Paul's Cathedral - Sir Christopher Wren's most famous work. Spectacular, and they started charging admission in 1993. But, Sir Chris supervised the construction of dozens of churches after the Great Fire, most of which are open, and free, and within walking distance of St. Paul's. Not quite as spectacular, but amazing. You could easily spend a whole day, moving from one to another.

Stonehenge - expensive, and fenced off so that you cannot even get up to it. However, just up the road (20? minutes) is Avebury, a set of stone circles that is huge. Big enough that a village is partially in it, and a couple of highways meet in the middle in a traffic circle. Granted, each stone is not quite as spectacular as at Stonehenge, but it is overall much larger, free, and with a couple of pubs right there.

This sort of thing exists all over the place. I have spoken to others that travelled to Europe, and have found that Italy and France are very similar. Really neat things, free, or low cost, with few tourists, but really worth seeing, and an overall better experience than the "name" place.
