What is the Best way to clean a School Backpack?

I bought a adiadas backpack from the salvation army and it's in pretty good shape but it is a little dirty in the light colored parts of it. It is Dark and light purple. I don't want to ruin it but i want the light purple parts to look a little cleaner. What is the best Way to clean it, without making it look worse??

I was thinking a toothbrush and soap would work, but my mom said that it would just make it look worse

Use a sponge with water first and spot clean it.
Oh, yes, also try using a white wash cloth.

If the dirt doesn't come off, try a small amount of dishwashing liquid and again, spot clean it.

You can also try a baking soda mixture, but you need to go back over it with a damp clean cloth to remove the residue.
